Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff! Twenty Years Flies By!
I remember Richard saying, “Something is different about this book, Kris. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff is flying off the shelves.”
It had been ten years as a psychologist and writer and his tenth book.
Boy, was he right. It was a truly magical time in our lives to see his ten years of due diligence and tenacity juggling his psychology private practice and career as an author to come to fruition—in such a BIG way. This little book took off and spread it’s light all over the world like fairy dust.
Early on when Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff first came out, Richard shared with me a dream he had where he was being interviewed. The interviewer asked him in his dream what it felt like to have written one of the fastest selling books of all time—that sold 3.2 million copies in its first year. And, guess what? When we received the year end sales figures, that little book had indeed flown off the shelves and had sold exactly 3.2 million copies.
On January 1 in 1997 we opened up USA Today and got what we thought was the surprise of a lifetime. Little did we know, on January 1 the very next year we’d get an even bigger surprise as we opened up USA Today and saw the headline: Sweat Reigns, Grisham does Doubletake! Topping the USA today’s #1 bestselling book of the year—two years in a row—was just an incredible feeling.
I’ll never forget that very first morning of 1998 when Richard looked me in the eyes and said, “We have to remember this moment and how it feels—this moment will never happen again.”
Thank you for remembering with me—such a special time.
Richard loved his work with such passion. I loved that he loved his work so much. It was such a pleasure to do my part holding his space and helping him to manifest such a powerful body of work in his lifetime. I was thrilled that he invited me into the series with Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff in Love. I began to blossom as a writer myself as I accepted the challenge to write my first solo book in the series: Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff for Women.
Celebrating twenty years of Don’t Sweat wisdom—my oh my, how does time fly by so fast?
Thank you for helping us celebrate this legacy of love that vibrantly lives on.
