7 Tips: How To Keep Everything in Perspective

Let’s talk perspective. . .after Donald Trump’s victory, we all realize that a significant part of the country is grieving the defeat of Kamala Harris. Beyond politics, many of us are struggling with the weight of uncertainty in these times. I feel it, too.  I’ve had a few sleepless nights of late, and I often find myself wondering about the world my grandchildren will inherit. What will it look like ten years from now?

If you’re feeling a similar sense of uncertainty, you’re not alone. Here are some reminders to help you cultivate calm and find that steady step forward amidst it all–keeping it all in perspective and returning to a better feeling inside.

Tip #1: Notice and Let Go

Our thoughts shape our emotions. Some thoughts come and go, but the ones that linger can create patterns of anxiety and a consistently low mood. As you catch yourself in negative thinking, ask: Is this something I can change? If the answer is no, tell yourself, “Cancel that. I’m letting this thought go.” With practice, this helps break the cycle, freeing you from its grip over time.

Tip #2: Return to Gratitude

Shift from your head to your heart by pausing to feel gratitude. Changing your focus to what you’re thankful for allows you to experience joy and lift your mood. It’s impossible to feel low when you’re genuinely grateful. Your grateful heart is the source of this powerful transformation.

Tip #3: Listening Deeply Brings Perspective

We all long to feel heard. Remember how wonderful it feels when someone truly listens? Offer others the gift of your full attention; it’s a powerful way to connect, and it enriches you as well.

Tip #4: Choose Kindness

Kindness leaves a lasting impact. When given a choice, choose to be kind over being right. It’s much easier than having to repair relationships after a moment of impatience. Kindness nurtures respect and harmony in yourself and your relationships.

Tip #5: Focus on What’s Good

What you focus on shapes your experience. When you choose to look for the good and the beautiful, you counteract the brain’s pattern of negative bias. Set an intention to see the positive around you, and watch how it brightens your outlook.

Tip #6: Treasuring Yourself is the Best Perspective

Self-love is about honoring who you are. Show yourself love by making choices that support your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Nourish your mind, body, and soul, and feel the difference it makes.

Tip #7: Begin Peacefully

How you start your day sets the tone for the rest of it. Start with gratitude and love. Create a morning ritual that inspires you from the very beginning, even if it’s just a few minutes of reflection on an uplifting thought.

Regardless of how the election ends, we can return to living with compassion, peace, and calm. We can joyfully return to keeping it all in perspective.
