Firing Up at Fifty-Something
Is fifty the new forty?
Nope.
Fifty is fifty, and in my case it’s fifty-two hard-won, well-earned years of wisdom and grace.
At this mid-ripe age, are we as redundant as we are made to feel in the corporate and singles world? Some might think so.
Nope. Not at all.
Truth is, we don’t dry up at forty, fifty or sixty—We fire up!
Smarter, wiser, wealthier, developed, focused, stronger, courageous, inspired, and fired up with a passion to give back and serve others authentically and vulnerably with pure heart and well- earned wisdom—-that can only come from the best education of all—experience.
This is me at fifty-two, but that wasn’t me at twenty-something.
In my twenties, I had no idea what I wanted to be—and I was still practically a baby!—but I was sure I was supposed to know what this grown up something was that I was going to devote my life to. I didn’t have a clue. I just launched into a direction that seemed the most promising to my identity at the time and that was marketing and graphic design.
I’ve always been somewhat of an entrepreneur since I was a kid. For example, I painted Christmas designs on storefront windows to earn extra money for presents during the holidays for my family and friends. After college, I got my massage certification and did massage professionally while building my graphic design business. I’ve done several successful network marketing ventures over the years. I now write books and blogs, produce podcasts, lead workshops and retreats, speak publicly, do transformational life coach work, and manage our global brand while finding new ways to explore entrepreneurism over the internet to help others live more vibrantly.
Mid-life does not at all represent what it used to, and if you’re with me on this, then you’ll agree that many of us will flourish in our fifties, sixties, and seventies with a passion for MORE. My parents are in their late seventies and early eighties and they just did something insanely youthful: they got a puppy! They maintain a gorgeous garden. My dad works in his wood shop and plays bridge and builds retaining walls. My mom quilts, plays bridge too, and helps run her local P.E.O. Chapter while maintaining a vivacious social calendar–for the both of them. In essence, they still have that same zest for MORE life, and they haven’t let age change their attitude!
There’s no need to be in crisis of change brought on by age.
This can be seen as a time to have the great adventure of your life or a revival career or to launch your inner entrepreneur–whatever lights your fire. The empty nest doesn’t mean we sit idly by while our kids go off to live their remarkable lives. It means we can fly too! We are not nearing retirement at all. We have two of the most precious commodities, now, that we were lacking these past years…
1. We have the time to devote our attention, focus, and a multitude of skills to something truly meaningful that we feel passionate about.
2. We have the wisdom that comes through experience–the best kind of learning.
If you feel like something is calling you to fire up your passion–it is! It’s YOU!
This is your time…
You are being called by spirit to be 100% present in your life, to realize your full potential with passion and meaning–and to have fun while you live your next great chapter!
What do you want to be when your kids grow up?
Richard and I always said that was a short answer: Happy!
