My Shopping Cleanse: Finding Satisfaction in Less

I’ve been reigning in my spending lately.  I found myself caught in what felt like a wash cycle—click, buy, return—on repeat. It was mindless, habitual, and honestly, a bit exhausting. There was no true satisfaction in it. I’ve decided: I’m done with that.

Something I’ve noticed about myself is this:  When I’m spending money mindlessly, something is missing–and it’s usually fun. (Meaning, I’m not having enough of it.)  I’ll scroll and search and fantasize about how I’ll use the item or how I’ll feel while wearing it. I’m looking for a hit–a boost of dopamine.  And, then, guess what?  The thing comes in the mail, and I’m looking at this dress or pair of shoes saying,” Where the heck will I wear this anyway?”  Recently, I bought two salad spinners because I had forgotten that I had already replaced the one I had thrown away.  Can you relate?  (If so, please reply back with your comment.)

Like I said, I’m done with that.

It takes time—at least a couple of months—to truly embrace a new habit and shift old patterns. And, this goes for any habit you want to truly curb or break. Whether it’s tweaking your diet or exercise routine or changing your spending habits–it’s all the same process.  That’s why I challenged myself to break free from the loop of buying things I don’t need. Maybe you’ll be inspired to do the same.

Here’s what I noticed: My counter is cluttered with lotions, potions, face creams, and serums. My drawers are overflowing with socks, panties, and bras. And my closets? Let’s just say clearing them out has become a top priority. I don’t need more stuff—I need to let go of the urge for more—I need to purge.

I’m proud to say that I’ve stuck to my “shopping cleanse,” and it’s been incredibly gratifying. All that real satfaction I was searching for. Here’s how I made it work:

My Shopping Cleanse Satisfaction Strategy:

  1. Set a Clear Goal
In February, I committed to buying no clothing or skincare for the entire month.
  2. Delete the Temptation
The moment a marketing text or email pops up, I delete it—or better yet, unsubscribe. I don’t even click the link.
  3. Ask the Hard Question
“Do I need this?” The honest answer is usually– No.
  4. Shop My Closet
I’ve been spending time rediscovering what I already own. It’s amazing how much we overlook what we have when we’re constantly chasing what’s new.
  5. Make it a Game
When a goal becomes a game, it carries a challenge that ignites discipline.  Make it a game, and soon you’ll see that the extra money you save can be used for something truly gratifying.

Overall, this practice has filled me with a surprising sense of joy and satisfaction. Not spending mindlessly has become its own reward—a reminder that enough is already here.
